Interested in practicing or developing your own facilitation or communication skills? Connecting with professionals from across campus? Mentoring a student?

At the Illinois Leadership Center, we provide various ways you can engage in meaningful leadership experiences with students.  Whether you are a staff or faculty member, university alum, or current student, we can find the right opportunity in which to share your knowledge and passion.  Some of our volunteer roles include serving as a:

  • Facilitator at one of our many i-programs
  • Leadership Certificate coach to students developing their leadership skills
  • Committee member on one of the Center's many committees
  • Workshop presenter on different leadership related topics

Facilitator

Facilitators are key to the success of our five i-programs.  Depending on the program, the facilitation team is a group alumni, faculty, staff, and students who help shape the experience and environment of each program.

As a facilitator, you could play two roles in the programs.  Our Lead Facilitators are usually responsible for trainings, introducing main concepts and objectives, and facilitating discussions among the large group of participants – which varies from 60 – 200 students depending on the program.  Small Group facilitators are responsible for groups of 8 – 12 students, and help build community in the program and help participants find meaning between the program curriculum and their everyday lives.

To apply to be a facilitator, simply login, create a profile in our system, and then fill out applications for the programs you are interested in.

Certificate Coach

The Certificate program is a self-directed 2-4 semester experience in leadership development.  Students integrate experience gained in and out of the classroom, group activities, critical reflection on their growth, and leadership development programs to complete a portfolio of their leadership skills.  As a Leadership Certificate Coach, you would be paired with a student who you would mentor and help support through the program.

Our coach volunteers consist of alumni, faculty/staff, local and global community members, and friends of the Center. As a Coach, your main responsibility is to meet with your student approximately twice a semester, and be passionate about helping your student develop his or her leadership skills. More information about being a coach can be found in our downloadable Coach Information Brochure.

To volunteer as a Certificate Coach, you may login, create a profile in our system, and then fill out the Coach Information sheet.

Other Opportunities

The Center provides other opportunities for volunteering, such as presenting a workshop to students or serving on committees.  For more information about any or all of these options, please contact us.
